Café in the Square: North Tawton’s Welcoming New Lunch Spot

Briony Jones

One of the highlights of my children’s visits to Grandma in North Tawton is sharing a cake at the local café. Long-time fans of Jen’s café we were excited to try out the new Café in the Square. It did not disappoint – my nine year old was heard exclaiming “I wish we could live here”.

Opened in August 2025 by Rachel Cooper, Café in the Square can be found at Broad Hall, 9 The Square, North Tawton, and is open Tuesday to Friday 9 to 4 and Saturday 9 to 1. Rachel, a keen cook, was encouraged by friends and family to open her own café, a place where she could share her talents with others. She offers a warm welcome, cosy atmosphere, and homemade food of high quality at affordable prices.

The sunny Tuesday that we chose for our visit showed off the space with light pouring in through the windows highlighting the tastefully decorated and comfortable interior. With seating options ranging from a sofa, tables, and a high bar, everyone can find a place, including your pet dogs. We settled on a lunch of pasties with salad, a bacon sandwich, cups of tea, and let’s not forget the strawberry ice cream milkshake! Visitors can also enjoy quiche, soup, cakes and other simple yet beautifully prepared options. The menu changes between winter and summer, with something for everyone.

Café in the Square is a real local place. We are sadly not locals, despite my 9-year old’s wish, but felt very much at home and will certainly be visiting again.
